Union
County rests in the beautiful North Georgia Mountains, bordering
North Carolina and Tennessee. 95 miles north of Atlanta, Blairsville
is in the heart of Union County. In 2003, the population of
Union County was 19,119. (The population of Blairsville itself,
around 700.) This area is definately laid-back, allowing you
to take your time admiring the breath taking scenery.
Blairsville is surrounded by sightseeing and outdoor recreational
opportunities. For instance, DeSota Falls, just 15 miles
from Blairsville, has many waterfalls and more than 600
acres for fishing, camping, and picnicking. Brasstown
Bald is Georgia's highest mountain at almost 5,000 feet
and just a few miles from Blairsville. From the top, you
can get an amazing view of four states. Lake Nottely offers
swimming, fishing, boating, jet skiing, and anything else
you can imagine. Vogel State Park is located 11 from Blairsville
and is Georgia's most popular state park, offering even
more activities. These are just a few of the amazing places
you can visit while in Blairsville!
There are also many events in Union County that provide
fun for the whole family. The Annual Sorghum Festival
in Blairsville is held in October and includes a parade,
car show, live music and clogging, arts and crafts, great
food, "biscuit-eatin' contests", and many other
great events. The Indian Summer Festival in Suches, Friday
night concerts at the courthouse, annual parades and celebrations,
are just a couple of examples of the great fun this closely-knit
community has together.
